18 - 20 January 2008

On January 18-20 Sussex ACF held its first Adult Adventure Training Weekend. Lt Scrase, County Adventure Training Officer (CATO), and SI Ingle had spent several months planning the weekend at Capel Curig Training Camp and were pleased that it had finally come to fruition.

There were three activities on the weekend, firstly climbing, headed up by SI Hall who is still recovering from a recent knee operation. He was training up SSI Williams, SMI Regan and SI McCourty for their SPA qualification (Single Pitch Award), because the weather was so bad, the climbing group took advantage of the new climbing tower and boldering rock at Capel Curig Camp.

Lt Hazell who, was also recovering from a recent surgery on her foot, was able to offer guidance and instruction to the paddlers. PI Dengate, SI Symes and SI Crowhurst enjoyed the paddling at Plas y Brenin, even though the weather conditions were very poor.

The route planned for the walkers, LT Scrase, SI Ingle and SI Joynes, took them up Pen y Ole Wen, however the zero visibility, poor weather conditions and time was against us and we cut the route short, stopping short of the summit by 15m.

The adventure didn’t end when we left camp. The landrover sustained a ‘blow-out’ just as we came onto the M23, however because of the skill of the highly trained driver the vehicle was brought under control and the driver and passengers completed a wheel change in 13 minutes – a time even a formula one team would be proud of on a landrover!!

Anyone wishing to come on future Adult AT Weekends should apply to their Company Training Officer.

08 - 10 February 2008

After the success of our North Wales trip for the Adventure training team, we moved to South Wales on the weekend of 8-10 of February.  The weekend was a chance for those seeking to further there mountain leadership skills. The team stayed in Sennybridge camp on the outskirts of the Brecon Beacons. The route for Saturday was a horseshoe route starting from Tef Fechan Forest and included the peaks of Corn Du, Pen y Fan & Cribyn. On Sunday, after leaving Sennybridge we parked up just north of Abergavenny and made our way up Sugar Loaf. Although not a large peak it has stunning views of the Brecon Beacons , is good for navigation practise and allows the team time still, to travel home in good time.
